From Musical Aurora® to Juilliard: Kai’s Journey at Belle Arti Center

Kai began his musical journey at Belle Arti at just two years old. Years later, that journey has taken him from Musical Aurora® and violin lessons to composition, a New York Philharmonic premiere, and Juilliard Pre-College.
A Musical Journey That Began at Age Two
Every young musician begins somewhere. For Kai Lin, that beginning was at Belle Arti Center for the Arts in Forest Hills, Queens, when he was just two years old. He entered Belle Arti’s Musical Aurora® program, where he began discovering music through rhythm, sound, movement, musical concepts, and hands on experiences with different instruments.
One childhood memory stayed with him for years: learning about the “Rhythm Pyramid.” Kai remembers telling his teacher that it resembled an Egyptian pyramid. Years later, as a young composer, he returned to that early concept and began expanding it for his own compositional work. What began as a childhood observation had become part of the way he thought about rhythm and composition.That curiosity would become a defining part of his musical journey.
Discovering the Violin
At four years old, Kai discovered what would become one of his great musical passions: the violin. He began studying with Ms. Rachel Varga, a member of the Belle Arti faculty, who helped him develop his technique, expand his repertoire, prepare for competitions, and grow into an increasingly serious young violinist.
Over the years, Kai earned numerous competition prizes and participated in festivals, academies, and masterclasses. At age eleven, he received the opportunity to perform with the Northshore Symphony Orchestra. His violin studies eventually led him to experiences including the Philadelphia International Music Festival, Summit Music Festival, the Internationale Sommerakademie at Universität Mozarteum, the Zakhar Bron Academy in Interlaken, and other international masterclasses.
From Music Theory to Composition
While developing as a violinist, Kai also began studying music theory with Mr. Dominic Carioti. Those lessons opened another world. Mr. Dominic introduced Kai to piano and composition while helping him develop a strong foundation in music theory, including figured bass and species counterpoint. But his education extended far beyond the fundamentals. Kai explored Gregorian chant, twelve tone music, Dada, jazz, and other musical traditions. He also learned flute, drums, and electric bass guitar.
Composition increasingly became an important part of his musical identity.
With Mr. Dominic’s guidance, Kai won First Prize in Composition at the Music International Grand Prix and prepared for opportunities including the New York Philharmonic’s Very Young Composers program and the New York Jazz Academy.
One of the most important milestones came with Kai’s composition Dream of Sounds, which premiered with the New York Philharmonic in 2025. Mr. Dominic also helped Kai prepare his application to Juilliard Pre College, where Kai is now studying composition.
Becoming a Versatile Musician
Kai’s education at Belle Arti was never confined to a single instrument or musical tradition. As he matured as a violinist, he began working regularly with Mr. Massimiliano Facchini, “Mr. Max,” who coached him and accompanied him for recordings, competitions, and performances.
At the same time, Kai continued exploring. He studied voice.He performed chamber music.
He joined ensembles. He became part of the Belle Arti Jazz Band, first playing flute and later electric bass guitar. He performed in jazz ensembles and continued playing violin in chamber groups. His musical world kept expanding.
In 2023, Kai performed the title role in Amahl and the Night Visitors with the New Jersey Opera Theater on opening night and returned again the following year.Then came another musical discovery: rock and roll.
When Ms. Rachel introduced him to Queen, another door opened. Kai began exploring pop and rock music independently, alongside his interests in Niccolò Paganini, Richard Wagner, jazz, church modes, contemporary composition, and classical music.For Kai, music had become much more than learning to play an instrument.
It had become a way of thinking.
More Than Music Lessons
Perhaps the most meaningful part of Kai’s reflection is that his years at Belle Arti influenced far more than his musical development. He credits his teachers with inspiring his curiosity about visual art, poetry, grammar, historical linguistics, history, mathematics, astrophysics, philosophy, and theology. That kind of growth reflects the broader Belle Arti approach to music education: helping students develop not only musical skill, but also creativity, curiosity, discipline, confidence, and independent thought. A child’s first music class may begin with a rhythm, a song, or the sound of an unfamiliar instrument.
No one can know exactly where that beginning will lead. For Kai, a journey that started in Musical Aurora at age two eventually led to violin competitions, orchestras, international festivals, jazz ensembles, composition, a New York Philharmonic premiere, and Juilliard Pre-College.
But just as important are the memories he carries with him: Belle Arti recitals, jazz band quizzes, Saturday coaching sessions, rehearsals, performances, conversations with teachers, musical discoveries, and years spent growing up surrounded by music.

Every Musical Journey Has a Beginning
Kai’s journey at Belle Arti began at just two years old. Your child does not need to know today where music will eventually take them. They simply need the opportunity to begin, explore, and grow.
